DIY Neon Cork Coasters

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Neon is back, folks. And not just back for a minute. No, it's back like 1989. Which, by the way, I am totally excited about! I happened to be born in 1986 so I kind of missed the whole 80's fashion thing. So I say bring it on so I can live it up! Anyway.... I have been needing a neon fix for a few weeks now. So yesterday when I spotted a whole section of fluorescent spray paints in Hobby Lobby I knew what I had to do. Thus, the "Neon Spray Paint Project" was born! So off to Goodwill I went to find the perfect canvases for my neon adventure. Here's what I found.....

The first thing I wanted to try was some of those amazing Neon tipped shoes that I've been seeing around Pinterest. My two favorite looks are here and here. Unfortunately, I totally ruined the shoes by spraying too much paint on them. I blame it on the excitement. *sigh* Maybe I'll be able to salvage them once they are dry and try again....

Next I went after those wicker plate holder / basket things. Everyone has seen these around, right? They are great for making paper plates sturdier, but they look like something my great, great grandma would look at and say "Aren't those just darling!". But paint these lovelies neon and look at what you've got!

Bam! Modern, funky, and totally NOT something that great, great grandma would dig! I am absolutely in love with the way the wicker basket looks in neon too! These were so easy to paint to. It went right on with not clumping and dried super fast. Perfect!

Next I tackled the corkboard. I decided to do one full board in a chevron pattern that I just taped down freehand. I cut down the other board into 4 x 4 squares to make coasters. What do you think?! Personally, I think the corkboard produced the best results. The color really pops like I wanted it too even more than it did on the wicker. I'm in heaven...

These are just a couple of ideas of what you can do with neon spray paint for almost no cost whatsoever. There are oodles more things that would be just as awesome. I've seen some great tutorials for necklaces, clothes, etc. and they are all so easy! You should get some. It will make your day really awesome.

Now I'm off to see what else I can NEONify!

Pretty Packages

I love pretty packaging! Out of all the items for sale in my Etsy shop, Bahana Splits Boutique, I have to admit that I think the gift wrap and packaging supplies are probably my favorites. The options of what you can do with each of them are endless.... they inspire me even when they are just sitting on the shelf! That is exactly what happened this afternoon, in fact! Enjoy the pretties!

Yes, I realize it is June, but I couldn't resist making some Christmas packages!!! They are still pretty to look at in the summer.  ;)

DIY Decorative Fabric Balls

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Don't you adore the fabric ball trend? I am totally digging it and have been coveting some I saw on Etsy for awhile now. I just love that they can be any style you want them to be depending on the fabric pattern and color that you choose. So I thought I'd try to make my own. How hard could it be? Turns out.... it's really, really easy! Which is good for me... because I like easy.

You only need fabric, a glue gun, scissors, and styrofoam balls. Most of you probably already have enough fabric lying around the house since you only need about a 1/4 yard for each ball. And I venture to say that most of you have a pair of scissors... maybe. If your husband hasn't forgotten where he put all 5 pairs that you used to have. Anyway, if you don't have a glue gun you can find one at any craft store for under $5.00 and you should you be able to find the styrofoam balls there as well. I used a 3" size ball, but you can pick whatever size you want. Personally, I'm a Hobby Lobby kind of girl. They seem to always have everything I need and more.

STEP 1:  Cut your fabric strips. I had pieces of fabric that were 18 inches x 1/2 yard. Since I used cotton fabric, I was able to just cut a slit about every 1 inch in the bottom of the fabric along the grain and then just rip each strip. Cotton will rip in a perfectly straight line. My mother-in-law taught me that trick awhile back and it totally works! I prefer the look of the ripped fabric strips, but you can cut them the whole way up if you desire. Don't worry about them being perfect. Once they are wrapped around the balls you won't even be able to tell.

STEP 2:  So I had about 8-10 fabric strips that were 1 inch x 18 inches. This part does not have to be exact. The size of the strips and number really varies on what size foam ball you are covering. Next you need to wrap each strip around the ball. Secure the ends with the glue gun. You could wrap them all in the same direction or however you want the pattern to look. I just went for the "cover the ball" technique. I wasn't really worried about a pattern. This is seriously so easy. Now are you ready to see how great they look?!

I know, right?! They look amazing and they were so simple to make!

So now I'm going to go back to Hobby Lobby and buy a ton of fabric in lots of different colors and patterns and make a million more of these. I'm in love with this!

New Duds

Just had to show off the skirt I scored last night. I love everything about it. I love the pattern, I love the fabric, and I love the fit. It's going to be what I wear with everything this summer. I can already see it paired with so many different things. I'm really happy about this.

Treasure Every Second

Saturday, June 2, 2012

Friday morning started out like any other day. I had a dentist appointment at 8:00 and was home by 9:00. I opened my computer to get to work responding to Etsy messages.

About 15 minutes into my work day I got a call from My Lovie. But when I answered the voice on the other end was not a familiar one. It was one of Darren's coworkers. I immediately knew something was wrong. He just said that Darren had been hit in the head with something and that I needed to get there as soon as I could because they were taking him to the hospital. I didn't ask any questions... I just got in my car and drove. I was so afraid, but I was trying to stay strong. The 60 minute drive to the hospital seemed like 10 hours. All I could think about was him hugging me goodbye that morning. I wished I would have held him a little longer.....

By some miracle, he was fine when I arrived. The nurses said they were shocked because apparently he was not doing well when he was first admitted. He had to be carried into the hospital because he couldn't stand and was bleeding pretty badly. He must have looked kind of horrible because other patients in the emergency room were asking the nurses if he was going to die. Thankfully at the end of this scary ordeal he just needed 6 stitches right above his eye. That is pretty amazing considering he was hit with a 10 ton hydraulic metal jack that flew through the air at his face.

It just goes to show you that you never know what a day is going to hold. Treasure every minute with the ones you love.

Oh... and here is the aftermath of it all. Isn't he cute?! Love the angry face. <3
